Mount Elgon National Park is one of East Africa’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes, centered around Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano with the largest volcanic base in the world. Covering approximately 4,000 km², this mountain straddles the border between eastern Uganda and western Kenya. With an 80 km-wide base and rising about 3,000 meters above the surrounding plains, Mount Elgon offers a cooler, serene escape from the heat below, while supporting diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity.

The park forms part of a transboundary conservation area between Uganda and Kenya and is recognized as a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme Reserve.
By Road:
1. Mountain Climbing
Mount Elgon offers a less strenuous alternative to other East African peaks. With a mild climate and lower elevation, it requires no technical climbing experience, making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned hikers.
2. Mountain Biking
Trails run from Sipi Trading Centre to Chema Hill in Kapchorwa (approx. 1.5 hours), offering scenic rides past waterfalls and rolling landscapes.
3. Bird Watching
Birding in Mount Elgon is immersive and rewarding. Guided walks through forest trails and open moorlands provide opportunities to spot rare and endemic species, including the lammergeier, sunbirds, and forest specialists. Early morning excursions offer the best sightings, accompanied by expert interpretation of bird calls and habitats.

Well-established trails take hikers through forests, caves, ridges, and waterfalls.
