Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Africa’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas. Characterized by a dry, hot, and isolated environment, the park remains spectacular, pristine, and largely undiscovered, offering an authentic safari experience away from mass tourism.
The landscape is defined by vast open savannahs, rugged hills, and seasonal sand rivers, creating a striking contrast where wildlife thrives alongside dry mountain forests and rocky outcrops known as kopjes.
The park is dominated by Mount Morungole, rising to approximately 2,750 meters, and is intersected by two major rivers:
Kidepo River
Narus River
During the dry season, the Kidepo River transforms into a wide, sandy riverbed (about 50 meters wide) lined with Borassus palm trees, offering one of the most unique and scenic landscapes in Uganda.
Kidepo supports a rich variety of wildlife, including:
77 species of mammals
Nearly 500 species of birds
Its isolation has helped preserve ecosystems where wildlife exists in a natural and undisturbed state, including species rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda.
The park covers approximately 1,442 km² and is located in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, bordering:
South Sudan (northwest)
Kenya (northeast)
